 Portrait photography is a rather complicated term to define. How does it differ from a head shot? Maybe that's a good place to start.

 The headshot's main purpose is to define how one looks. There is very little intrinsic artistic value. photographing a head shot is a very technical process of lighting, angle and posing designed to create an image with visual impact conveying a person's appearance and energy with a style dictated by the whim and confines of the entertainment industry.

  Portrait photography will capture a person's facial demeanor, but it doesn't stop there. It is an artistic endeavor, and can be approached in a variety of ways, too many for me to name here. Headshots have definite rules, portraiture doesn't, it's loosely defined, which can give the subject and photographer a lot of latitude to work with.
